Word 2003:  Full Day Advanced Formatting Workshop

The intent of this full-day class is to discuss the origins of Word’s formatting from templates through the Word formatting model to the advanced use of styles.  Students may also bring their own problem documents to class (via email or flash drive) and discuss these documents with their instructor.

Prerequisite Classes

·         Word 2003 Level One

·         Word 2003 Level Two

·         Word 2003 Level Three (not mandatory, but recommended)

Performance-Based Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

·         Understand the role of templates in Word documents

·         Understand Word’s object-based formatting model

·         Understand what styles are available in typical Word documents

·         Investigate and understand style-based formatting

·         Understand the role styles play in paragraph numbering

·         Modify existing styles and create new styles

·         Understand strategies on how to work with non-styled documents

·         Understand the difference between list numbering and outline numbering

·         Understand best practices for use of all forms of automated bullets and numbering, and modifying bullets and numbering

·         Understand the 5 primary reasons for using sections breaks in Word

·         Understand how headers and footers are connected between sections

·         Understand the unique challenges of different first page and same as previous in headers and footers

Topic 1: Templates and the Word Formatting Model

·         Global and regular templates

·         How templates affect Word toolbars, keystrokes, and styles

·         Understanding the Word formatting model

Topic 2:  Style-based Formatting

·         How to set up Word to reveal styles most efficiently

·         Paragraph vs. character styles

·         Demonstration of basic styles

·         Modifying a style
